Welcome
Welcome to the Prous Science DAILY ESSENTIALS news and alerting service. DAILY ESSENTIALS is a clear, concise, and flexible service providing up-to-the-minute drug information on the Internet every business day. DAILY ESSENTIALS complements the user friendliness of a text-based information system with search capabilities that allow users to pinpoint specific information within the cumulative data set.
In addition to the daily Internet service (available on an annual-license-fee or pay-per-view basis), a number of alternative delivery formats are offered as a weekly and/or monthly service. Contact Prous Science for details on these options.

Software Requirements
DAILY ESSENTIALS runs under any JavaScript-enabled Web browser.

Getting Started
To enter DAILY ESSENTIALS on the Internet connect to the Prous Science WWW home page (http://www.prous.com) and click on the DAILY ESSENTIALS icon. From the DAILY ESSENTIALS Home Page click on the Search engine icon. The DAILY ESSENTIALS Home Page address or DAILY ESSENTIALS Search Form address can be saved as a bookmark.
At this point a user registration dialog box appears asking for user ID and password. (Users who are registered on a pay-per-view basis will be advised if their account balance has gone below the reserve.) Enter the user ID and password and click on Login.
The DAILY ESSENTIALS search form is displayed. Default parameters are set for a search covering the time period from the last visit up to the present, with the information retrieved to be grouped by Section (i.e., broad therapeutic classification) and with any associated chemical structures to be displayed automatically. Enter search terms (most fields have a browse index pushbutton to the right of the blank field to assist in entering search terms). Select a field by which to group the information retrieved. Choose whether or not to display structures automatically. (Important: Pay-per-view users should make sure that the correct Display Structures option has been marked.) Click on Search.
If a message appears regarding security of information transmission on the Internet (this will depend on the configuration of the Web browser), click on Continue to acknowledge this message and proceed. Click on the checkbox to disable this message feature if desired.
A list of the titles of the first set of news items retrieved by the search is displayed. If the structure display option was set to "Yes" in the search form, a red hexagon (representing a benzene ring) is displayed next to the title of those news items with an associated chemical structure image. The list of titles includes approximately 20 items; for additional items click on More Results at the bottom of the page.
Click on each title to see the individual news item and associated image. Pay-per-view users are advised at this point if their account balances are approaching or below reserve.
From each individual news item click on Back at the bottom of the page to return to the titles page. Click on Search to return to the DAILY ESSENTIALS search form. The terms used in the last search remain on screen so that additional refinements can be introduced if necessary. For a new search, click on Reset to clear the search form (note that this reinserts the default parameters in the From, To and Group By fields and checks Yes for structure display).

Searching
The following fields have a controlled vocabulary and associated browse index: Company, Section, Therapeutic Group, Type of Compound, and Source of Information. Click on the pushbutton to the right of each field to open the associated browse index and select a term or terms from the list. Multiple terms can be selected in the usual way for the computer's operating system (e.g., CTRL-Click for Windows(tm) systems and Click for X-Windows(tm) systems). If more than one term is selected for a given field, terms are automatically combined using the Boolean OR operator, which can be modified if necessary. Click on OK to copy the term(s) to the search field and exit the browse index.
The browse index for the From field offers suggestions for search criteria; however, dates can also be entered manually (format: MM/DD/YYYY).
Clicking on the pushbutton next to the To field reinserts the default term ("Today") if this has been changed. Dates can also be entered manually (format: MM/DD/YYYY).
The browse index for the Company field is subdivided by letter of the alphabet. Click on a letter at the top of the index to display a list of the entities beginning with that letter (entities beginning with a number are found under the letter A).
Truncation is automatic on both the left and right and no truncation operators are necessary.
The AND, OR, and NOT Boolean search operators can be used to combine search terms in each field. The OR operator is entered automatically if more than one term is chosen from a browse index. To enter the AND, OR, or NOT operators manually, type them enclosed in periods as follows: .and. .or. .not. leaving a space between the search terms and the operators.
Search results can be grouped by one of the following options: Section (default option), Therapeutic Group, Company, Type of Compound, Source of Information, or Date. Within each option results are ordered by date.
When grouping search results by an option that can have multiple occurrences for a given text (i.e., Company and Therapeutic Group options), a news item may appear more than once in the list of titles displayed. For example, a search to be grouped by Company will list the title of a news item more than once if more than one company is cited in the body of the text. This also occurs when drugs from different therapeutic categories are cited in a single text.

Other options available from the browse index are: Today, Last week, Last month, Last two months, and Last year, all calculated on a physical-period-of-time basis (i.e., last year means since a year ago today, not since January 1, 1996). Dates may also be entered manually in MM/DD/YYYY format.
The default setting for the To field is "Today." Dates may also be entered manually in MM/DD/YYYY format. The pushbutton next to the To field reinserts the default term if this has been changed.

Terms in the Section field are part of a controlled vocabulary of a broad therapeutic classification assigned to each news item. Use the browse index to select search terms for this field.
Terms in the Therapeutic Group field are part of a controlled vocabulary of a (narrower) therapeutic classification assigned to products cited in the news items. Use the browse index to select search terms for this field.
The Contents field allows full-text searching by any word in the text of a news item.
Terms in the Type of Compound field are part of a controlled vocabulary classifying products by type (Licensing Opportunity, Line Extension, New Approval, New Compound or New Launch). Use the browse index to select search terms for this field.
